About Woodbrooke

Woodbrooke Centenary Appeal

Centenary AppealIn 1903, Woodbrooke was an experiment - the vision of the 25-year-old John Wilhelm Rowntree and the man of faith and business, George Cadbury. In opposition to war and social inequality, they developed, and we continue, practices of love, worship, liberty and respect for others. Today we can say that:

  • Woodbrooke's short course programme enriches the life of more than 2000 lives a year
  • More than 50 Friends a year volunteer their time we bring Woodbrooke's diverse programme direct to meetings across the UK
  • Quaker groups worldwide regularly make us their base for meetings
  • Over 100 non-Quaker bodies often make their first contact with Quakers by using us as a conference centre

What does not change is the need for financial support

We are the only centre for Quaker teaching in Europe. We support a permanent teaching team, a library of world significance and full-time administration, catering and domestic staff to run a 68-bedroom residential centre which runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We plan new ventures and help to sustain both the personal and corporate spiritual life of Britain Yearly Meeting. All this needs subsidy.

Generous gifts have helped us undertake the refurbishment of our facilities; your ongoing support enables us to create new projects, such as the Ferguson Quaker Fellowship and Hearts and Minds Prepared. The aim is to support the growth of our work in Quaker education.

Your donation could take the Woodbrooke experience of Quaker learning out to meetings, and bring more Friends to Woodbrooke to share in residential learning together.

£750,000 will replenish our reserves so we can continue to draw on our own finances for day-to-day activity, such as proper building maintenance.

£750,000 will enable us to share the opportunities at Woodbrooke with more people. Your donation can establish a partnership scheme offering even more Friends and attenders to make the most of what Woodbrooke has to offer.
