Courses & Learning

Longer study with us

Postgraduate StudyWoodbrooke offers a place of quiet reflection where you can undertake private study and research, take part in short courses or work towards academic qualifications. Woodbrooke was set up in 1903 to support the learning of Quakers worldwide and we see personal research as an important aspect of the studying and scholarship which takes place here.

Postgraduate study at Woodbrooke

You can take a postgraduate qualification by enrolling with our Centre for Postgraduate Quaker Studies for a taught course or research work. We can offer taught courses at Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and MA level and research courses at Masters and Doctorate level.

The two year Equipping for Ministry course aims to give you a solid grounding in thinking about what it is to be a Quaker in the world today and how you are personally to live out that calling. Independent research at Woodbrooke

You can choose to concentrate entirely on your own research project whilst living at Woodbrooke. We offer a variety of packages from bed and breakfast to full board - please contact us for further details. We have students who live here whilst studying at the University of Birmingham and other institutions locally.

Our staff have a wide range of research interests between them including the following: Jewish-Christian Relations; contemporary issues in unprogrammed Quakerism; Quakers and the Second Coming; religious experience in early Christianity and early Quakerism; Quakerism and the nineteenth century women's movement; Christian and post-Christian Feminist theology; Quaker testimonies.

Sabbaticals at Woodbrooke

Woodbrooke has a flexible approach and a strong community atmosphere to help you make the most of your sabbatical. We can provide tutorial support by arrangement and visitors are free to use our extensive library during their stay.

Quakers have a long history of ecumenical involvement and Woodbrooke welcomes visitors of other denominations and faiths (or those of no faith) who would like to share the life of our community.

Financial Help

Help with fees may be available to help meet the cost of staying at Woodbrooke. We offer the Eva Koch Scholarship annually to one or two individuals who are able to spend six months with us studying issues concerned with Quakerism. We also offer the Ferguson Fellowship for nine months, exploring contemporary issues of interest to Friends.
