Courses & Learning

Quaker Approaches to Spiritual Practice pathway

This pathway in the Woodbrooke programme aims to help Friends expand and deepen their knowledge, understanding and experience of spiritual practice and prayer. Some courses may be marked as suitable for beginners or for those with a little more experience – but since we are all only ever beginners in prayer, participants will be very welcome to attend any of the courses as they feel led.

Courses in the 2012 programme include:

Prayer: an introduction 6-8 July

Prayer is essential to being human but our needs are not all the same. Come and discover what forms of prayer might work for you and take some first steps.

Developing a practice of Christian Meditation 5-7 September

An introduction to the practice and teaching of an ancient tradition of prayer rooted in the Gospels and the early Christian monastic tradition of the Desert.

Creative Contemplation: prayer, art and meditation 24-26 September

This workshop will combine a variety of meditation methods with a range of possibilities for expressive and responsive art.

A Quaker Retreat 8-11 October

An opportunity to explore spiritual practice in a retreat atmosphere, including through visual, creative and contemplative approaches, movement, words and the natural world.

Water from the Sources 18-21 November

Drawing strength and inspiration from older and more modern traditions, this is an opportunity to broaden and deepen our prayer and spiritual practice - experiencing 'Water from the Sources'.

Being Peace 14-16 December

Deep peace can be discovered through simple practices of being present and the support of doing this in a group. Guidance will be given on a variety of practices to encourage a sense of mindfulness.
