Befriending the Mystery With Spinoza
Friday 26 February 2027
18:30-20:30 (UK time)
Benjamin Wood
Do you attend Meeting but don’t feel religious? Are you moved by Quaker worship but find God or Spirit-language difficult? Are you drawn towards Jesus but alienated by Christianity? Using these questions as a springboard, this session considers the significance of Benedict Spinoza’s philosophy for Quakers today.
Frequently regarded as a hideous heretic in his lifetime, Spinoza remains a religious trailblazer. In this session, we’ll consider Spinoza’s connection with early Quaker communities, and some of the ways his approach to religious life might resonant with Friends today. This session will appeal to both Universalist and Non-Theist Friends who want to deepen their understanding of religious identity, faith, and God-language.
