Bubbling Springs: The Life and Writings of Margaret Fell
Thursday 4 February - Thursday 11 March 2027
The live Zoom sessions are at 19:00-21:00 (UK time) every Thursday.
Shulamith Clearbridge
Margaret Fell is often called “the mother of Quakerism” because of her pivotal role in establishing the Religious Society of Friends. Join us to learn about this remarkable woman and to be inspired through reading her own words, carefully adapted into modern English.
Margaret Fell’s inspirational writing is striking and beautiful, as well as being uncannily appropriate for us now. This course will include the story of Margaret and her times, readings of some of her letters and epistles, a transcript of her first trial (she was imprisoned three times), and abundant time to explore her words individually and in small and large groups. Margaret’s life and words can be a source of help throughout our lives and in this course we’ll often use the lectio divina style of reading to help us towards understanding her not only with our minds, but with our hearts.
The course tutor, Shulamith Clearbridge, has adapted Margaret’s words into modern language and neutral gender, and will share these adaptations with participants, as well as copies of the original letters. With an awareness that early Friends were all Christians, but some modern Friends are not, the material presented in the course is designed to be accessible and meaningful to people of all spiritual paths.
Shulamith has spent years studying the works of early Friends. She hopes that by giving participants her adaptations of Margaret’s words along with the original letters, Friends will eventually be able to comprehend not only Margaret, but other early Friends’ words in their original form.
