Friends are known for their social justice work, but some Quakers also played a role in the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved people. This introductory seminar will explore what it means to ‘challenge’ traditional histories, focusing on the history of Quakers in relation to enslavement.


This session will provide an overview of themes which will be discussed at greater length in the upcoming Woodbrooke course: “Challenging Traditional Quaker Histories: Quakers and Enslavement”.

This seminar will last 90 minutes, and will include a mixture of presentation learning as well as break-out room discussions and group work analysing relevant primary materials.
