Friends are often remembered in traditional Quaker histories for their notable work on social justice and peace campaigns. It is less commonly acknowledged that some Quakers were heavily involved in the transatlantic trade of enslaved people.
This course is part of a series which aims to challenge certain Quaker histories as they are traditionally taught. Participants will be introduced to histories of Quakerism they may not have encountered before—in this course, the history of Quakers as enslavers—and discuss the legacy of Quaker participation in systems of oppression and subjugation.
This course will be delivered through four sessions (a mixture of live and pre-recorded) with accompanying materials which participants will be expected to work through on a weekly basis. There will also be a discussion section held once per week for participants to discuss the material with the tutor and other participants and to ask any questions they may have concerning the content of the week’s session.
There will be some material to look at before the first session. We will email you around one week prior to the course with information about accessing the course, including this material, on our online learning platform (Moodle).
On the booking form, there is a chance for you to let us know about any accessibility or communication adjustments that will enable you to participate more fully in the course. Automated Zoom closed captions are available for all live sessions but if you feel you require more accurate closed captioning please email us directly in addition to booking.
