Food Faith and Witness

In this moment of urgency, how do we relate to the planet and one another? This course explores our relationship with food and its role in connecting us to ourselves, our communities, and the environment.

Food is at the meeting point between nature and culture, sacred and profane, local and global. What, and how we eat, has always been a central question in the human condition. Whether it’s a question of survival, celebration or ritual, food and the sharing of it is deeply tied to our notions of belonging, community and spirituality.

In this time of climate crisis, how should we nourish ourselves, our communities and the planet?
How can we navigate conversations about freedom and responsibility in relation to food and climate?
What might a Quaker approach to food look like in our Meetings, gatherings and venues?
Can we create shared responses to the climate crisis, decentring the emphasis on individual choices, while also being inclusive?

The course will explore these themes through a mixture of shared material and presentations, interactive dialogue and creative exercises. Space will be given for dialogue and discussion on possibilities for action and creative responses that can be taken into our Meetings and our own lives.

There will be some material to look at before the first session. We will email you around one week prior to the course with information about accessing the course, including this material, on our online learning platform (Moodle).
