Quakers around the world today are actively responding to the global climate crisis. How have Friends historically engaged with the Earth, its different environments, flora and fauna?
This three-week course explores Quakers’ historical relationship to the planet Earth, broadly conceived as ‘Quaker environmentalism’.
Each 90-minute session will focus on different facets of Friends’ connections in the past to environmentalism, including animals and animal rights, botany and natural history, as well as the relationship between European colonialism and contemporary climate injustice.
This purpose of this course is to encourage reflection on how histories of Quaker engagements with the environment and Earth in the past might inform or inspire ongoing work in the present. No prior knowledge necessary for participation.
This course will involve:
Discussion, Written and visual, Zoom Session
