From Problem to Programme: Practical Paths to Social Change

John Lampen
Quakers, while deeply concerned about social problems, often can’t see how to make a difference. John Lampen has been part of groups who found ways to alter troubling situations. This course explores how this was done and how it can stimulate us to move beyond public protest, donating and letter-writing.
John and his wife Diana lived in Northern Ireland for eleven years during the “troubles” and have worked in conflict regions such as former Yugoslavia, Uganda, apartheid South Africa, and the former Soviet Union. He is author of the 1987 Swarthmore Lecture Mending Hurts, and Building the Peace: Good practice in community relations work in Northern Ireland.
The course will start by looking at two examples in which John was deeply involved, and see what was achieved. It will then apply the same approach to a current example, chosen from the participants’ suggestions.
