How Do Quakers Talk About God

Love, Light, Spirit, Christ, Buddha, Seed, Energy, and more: Quakers talk about the divine in many ways. They also value silence. In this one-off session we’ll have a brief tour of some of the expressions Quakers use and why it’s difficult.

This session will be discussion-based and interactive. We’ll look at some real examples of things Quakers say about what we encounter in meeting for worship. Taking a step back, we’ll think about why talking about God is difficult – the challenge of putting the mystery of the divine into words – and also consider what Quakers don’t usually say.

You are welcome to bring your own questions to this session, whether you have no experience of Quaker communities or a lot. We will cover nontheist concerns about using God language and look at how Quakers today sometimes draw on multiple religious traditions. You will be encouraged to find and use words which reflect your experience, whatever that is.
