Infinite Wonder: Mathematics and Spirituality

Where is the path to that “beyond”? We take a first step on it in this session, catching awe-inspiring glimpses of spirituality within four aspects of mathematics. We’ll begin by considering the question of whether mathematics is discovered or invented, then consider the way in which this happens, a process which bears, believe it or not, a close resemblance to what can happen in a Quaker meeting for worship. We’ll then revel in the beauty within mathematics and finally we’ll talk about the surprising and tantalising way in which mathematics can be used to shed light on this world in which we all live.

There will be short presentations on the four topics of mathematical existence, the discovery process, its beauty and its utility, with opportunities to share thoughts and reactions.

All are welcome – we won’t be solving equations. Having said that, if you’ve done A-level maths, even if now you’ve forgotten most of it, this session should remind you why your decision was wise.

Mathematicians prefer to do mathematics rather than talk about doing it. For this reason little appears to have been written on the topic of this session, meaning that the session will inevitably “approach new country”. It will be open-ended, but aims to send you away musing over the striking parallels between mathematics and spirituality.
