What connections existed between Quaker Meetings in seventeenth-century East London to transatlantic chattel enslavement? What can current research tell us about these connections and what they might mean for Quaker communities today?
This 90-minute session offers an overview of the extensive research conducted by PhD researcher Samuel Barber at the Library of the Society of Friends into the connections between Radcliffe Meeting and chattel enslavement in North America and the Caribbean between 1655 and 1700.
Participants will hear a presentation from Samuel detailing findings from his project undertaken at Friends House in 2025 as part of the University of Manchester’s PGR Placement scheme, followed by a period of discussion and Q&A with Samuel.
