Resilient Communities Permaculture Design for Sustainability in All Areas of Life

In this session, we will explore how Quaker principles align with and contribute to permaculture – a design framework inspired by natural ecosystems that addresses holistic needs through cooperative relationships within a living system.

Participants will learn more about permaculture and explore examples of Quaker faith and practice applied to holistic ecological design. Whether you are new to permaculture or familiar with its principles, this session will offer concrete examples and projects using permaculture worldwide which Friends can connect with, support or join to build resilient communities.

The session will begin with an overview of the principles of permaculture with a specific emphasis on areas of synchronicity within Friends’ faith and practice.

Next, we will explore specific examples of Quaker-led permaculture projects worldwide, shared in an interactive format with facilitation by Evan Welkin, former facilitator of the Global Quaker Sustainability Network and current Executive Secretary of the FWCC Section of the Americas.

Participants will also be given time to explore principles of permaculture design in small groups, considering how they might apply or engage with its design principles to enhance resilience in their own communities.
Permaculture is a practical example of ways to enact the ‘radical visioning’ Rob Hopkins will encourage us to undertake in the first session in the ‘Resilient Communities’ series. It offers an approach that aligns with our testimony to simplicity and sustainability. Holistic systems that re-use outputs as inputs (no waste), the key to a sustainable future.
