National ‘security’ takes precedence among governments but for security to be real and lasting, issues of social and climate justice, economics and human rights must be addressed. This course explores what centring human security could mean for the UK.

This course will explore the concept of human security, helping you to articulate the connections between different issues of peace and justice, and challenge dominant ideas about national ‘security’.

Using Rethinking Security’s recently published Human Security Strategy for the UK, participants will discuss current approaches to the security in the UK, why these are failing us and how security policy could be done differently.

Using the evidence gathered for the Human Security Strategy, we will consider how and why policy needs to change at the international level, for communities and for individuals. Each week we will explore how our Quaker Testimonies link to and nourish this human-centred understanding of security.

Ahead of a likely general election, this course will help you to think deeply about issues you may already be active on and their connections to each other, and equip you to engage with decision makers.
