Course Details

During this course we will explore in greater depth the issues raised in the 2017 Swarthmore Lecture: thinking about how each of us might address inequality in housing where we live, how we might encourage big employers in our area to become accredited Living Wage organisations, and how we might level the playing field of equality of opportunity for young people.

As Catherine said in her lecture ‘A world that is more equal economically would be a world that is more spiritually in tune too’. The course will look at what each of us can do to bring about a world like that.

Listen to the 2017 Swarthmore Lecture

The lecture focused on addressing inequality, tackling poverty and promoting social justice. It examined how Quakers effect change through politics – both participatory and representative – whilst living out faith in the world. Catherine said, “For me, actively advancing the cause of equality is both a political imperative and a spiritual vocation.”

Catherine West is the member of Parliament for Hornsey & Wood Green, and delivered the 2017 Swarthmore Lecture.

Maud Grainger is Woodbrooke's Faith in Action Tutor.
