Fran Handrick

Fran Handrick completed her PhD on the changing lives of Amish women at Woodbrooke and is a regular presenter about Amish life. When carrying out fieldwork, I made three trips to American Amish communities living with Amish families in Pennsylvania and Ohio.  I took part in the daily lives of the families with whom I lived. This included activities which vary by season such as gardening and preserving foods, family activities in Amish schools, visits to Amish workplaces, Quiltings, Singings, Family Reunions, Benefit Auctions and Amish Markets. The research was informed by individual interviews with women and ethnographic research from living within the communities. I loved every minute of it. More recently, my work has been used by BBC, BBC America and by the website Amish America.
