My research is on evaluating the presence and the effect of dialectic within the ideological dynamics of C19 Britain. Although great changes affected political, cultural, religious and scientific thinking they are often considered as separate from each other and sometimes in conflict. My project demonstrates that dialectic emerged powerfully in this period and affected the ideology in a general way.

Dialectic, ideology, dogma, radical, culture.

About John Cartwright

(United Kingdom)

I begin my work by defining the philosophical practice of dialectic and how it can be identified even when not specified. Then I refer to the works of practitioners who apply the concept explicitly. Having a concept-in-use, I go on to extract examples of practiced use in a range of arenas associated with the rapid ideological changes in mid-Victorian Britain. The separations between topics, for example that between science, religion and politics, are then scrutinised for the presence of commonalities in process.
