Quakers and the Crisis of Truth

5 September 2022 - 16 October 2022

The live Zoom sessions are at 19:00-20:30 (UK time) every Monday during this period.

Quakers & Crisis of Truth

Many thinkers acknowledge that we are living in troubled times with respect to truth. Some even call this time a “post-truth” era. How did we get here, and is there any hope of addressing this problem?

An early name for the Quakers was “Friends of Truth,” and it has been argued that the distinctive Quaker way of understanding truth, grounded in experience and communal discernment, not only integrates scientific, religious, and ethical knowledge, but is potentially helpful in addressing our wider truth crisis. In this course you will be invited in to an opportunity for an in-depth exploration of this possibility. We will examine how the truth crisis developed, explore the distinctive characteristics of Quaker thought that are helpful for addressing this truth crisis, and share some practical advice for ourselves and our Meetings. Participants will have opportunities to clarify and develop their own thinking and cultivate their ability to use language flexibly to help them connect meaningfully in dialogue even to those whose ways of thinking are very different from their own. There will be six weekly sessions, and there will be a Moodle site for materials for optional deeper study and for online discussion.

The date period given for the course is when you are expected to interact with the online material and discussion forum; you can work on this at any time to suit you.

All times are given as UK time. Make sure to check your own timezone at www.savvytime.com/converter.
