Quaker Buildings Abroad

Research by David M Butler, author of Quaker Meeting Houses of Britain (1999) and Quaker Meeting Houses of Ireland (2004).

This work is an account of the places abroad where Quaker meetings were settled mainly through the work of British Friends; taking particular note of the meeting houses and their sites, their burial grounds, schools and other premises; from 1652 to 1945 with a postscript to 2000.

Work is currently being untaken to complete the third section on ‘Friends in the Mission Field’, we hope for this to be available before the end of 2026.

My Dad, David Butler, worked on this project from 2004 until he died in 2019. Since then a number of people have tried to help me to tidy it up and get it ready for publication, however we have not managed to get it to a suitable standard. We have made a number of corrections but are aware that there are still issues unresolved, so we present it here in this online format for people to download and use as they wish, with the caveat there will be some errors.

The whole text falls into three sections: Friends in Europe, Friends in the British Colonies and then Friends’ Missions. You will find more about this division in the Introduction.
