Charles Tauber has been a Quaker since the early 70s and obtained a qualification as a physician from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands where, during most of his studies, he worked as a student assistant at the Department of Psychiatry.

He worked with the Medical Examination Group, a joint project of Amnesty International and the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, and in other Dutch groups supporting asylum seekers and refugees in their requests for asylum and with other medical and psychological issues and began to teach and supervise lay volunteers in giving assistance to traumatized asylum seekers and to one another.

When the wars in the former Yugoslavia broke out in the early 1990s, Tauber was key in the formation of a working group for such refugees.
Subsequently, this led to the formation of the Stichting Coalition for Work with Psychotrauma and Peace (CWWPP; www.cwwpp.org; cwwppsummer@gmail.com), which has been in the Western Balkans since 1995. The aim of the CWWPP is to increase the capacity, primarily among previously untrained people, to assist people to give psychological care to one another and in their wider communities. Education and supervision are given in a highly participatory “Rogerian” manner, primarily online, to people in a number of parts of the world. Such assistance is given without charge.
