Make a donation - Covid-19 Appeal

The worship, learning, and research that Woodbrooke provides aren't possible without the kind donations we receive in support of our work. At the moment our ability to generate income from the Woodbrooke Centre in Birmingham has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 outbreak and we are concerned about the long-term impact on Woodbrooke. We aren't eligible for the majority of the current government support. We would welcome any contributions via donations, grants or legacies to help us to continue nurturing the Quaker community for years to come. If you can help in any way please get in contact.

Reclaim Gift Aid

Make a donation WoodbrookeAdd 25% more to your donation at no cost to you. A Gift Aid declaration allows Woodbrooke to claim tax back on eligible donations. It means that for every £1 you donate to Woodbrooke we can claim back 25p, at no extra cost to you.

By ticking the "Yes" box, I agree I would like Woodbrooke to reclaim the tax on all qualifying donations I have made, as well as any future donations, until I notify them otherwise. I understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year I may be asked to pay any difference. I understand that Woodbrooke will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When Woodbrooke receives a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.

Why does woodbrooke need help?

Our dream is to make Woodbrooke learning freely available to all, we don’t yet live in that world. In this world, even prior to Covid-19 we had to charge for our learning. We’ve now cancelled all of our onsite and on-the-road learning programme for the foreseeable future. This means the cost of the developing and delivering the programme, and employing our staff team hasn’t been covered and we have very limited ways to recoup these costs.

We have always subsidised our learning in order to make it as accessible as possible. Due to Covid-19 all of the commercial income that has provided a large part of that subsidy has disappeared. The impact of this is compounded by the fact that many of the costs for the upkeep of Woodbrooke have not disappeared and they represent a significant monthly financial outlay. We are continuing to explore the financial support on offer from the government but have thus far found that Woodbrooke is not able to apply for most of the schemes for various reasons.

We are moving more courses online and developing new ones but, as with all our learning, the costs of these are heavily subsidised in order to make them accessible to as many Friends as possible.

We do not receive financial support from Britain Yearly Meeting to run the Woodbrooke site or provide learning. BYM commissions us a provider for specific projects such as EAPPI training and the new Climate Crisis project, for which money is ring-fenced to deliver this work on BYM’s behalf.

We are deeply grateful for those trusts, meetings and individuals who are already supporting Woodbrooke. We believe that Woodbrooke has something unique and important to offer the world. We want to be able to continue to offer our online learning and worship, and reopen our centre in Birmingham after the Covid-19 lock-down ends. Without extra support over the coming weeks and months, we might not be in a position to do that.
